Facial Recognition

Before Roscoe left Kaiser in Roseville, his facial puffiness was still rather evident. Roscoe had woken up quite a bit and was returning to a muted version of his normal self. Here's a video we took of him when he first started keeping his eyes open:

and then here he is a few hours later, being much more alert. As you can see, his curiosity started returning as he played with his hand in his mouth. It was fun to see him do this, because there was no longer any threat of him accidentally fishing out his feeding tube:

Comparing his face from early yesterday with his face today, you can see that his normal "Roscoe" face has almost completely returned. We can thank several huge diapers and some increased movement for getting rid of the fluid that collected in his face over days of being paralyzed:
Yesterday

Today

Despite being constantly given a sedative (midazolam) and painkiller (fentanyl), Roscoe still moves around like his old self (although not quite as energetically). Today we snapped these pictures as he sucked his thumb and listened to us read a book:

After I post this, I'll write another blog post to describe his trip to UCSF and the events of the first day.
